What is BESS and How Does it Work

Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) is a technology that stores electrical energy in batteries for later use, commonly combining batteries, inverters, controllers, and monitoring software. These systems are vital for storing surplus energy from renewable sources like solar and wind, which can then be discharged during periods of high demand, power outages, or when renewable generation is unavailable. BESS helps stabilize the power grid, integrate renewables, and reduce energy costs. 

 

How a BESS Works

·        Charging: A BESS charges by capturing energy from a source, such as solar panels, wind turbines, or the main grid.

·        Storing: The collected energy is stored in batteries, often converted to a DC (direct current) format.

·        Discharging: When needed, the stored energy is converted back to AC (alternating current) by inverters and delivered to power a home, business, or the grid.

·        Managing: A controller system manages the entire charging and discharging process to ensure optimal performance and efficiency. 

 

Key Functions and Benefits

·        Renewable energy integration: Addresses the intermittent nature of solar and wind power by storing excess energy for use when the sun isn't shining or the wind isn't blowing.
